You can understand why Marvel executives have cited Spiderman: Far From Home as the culmination of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and not the beginning of Phase 4. As we can see from this latest trailer, the plot of Spiderman: Far From Home is clearly dealing with the repercussions that Peter experiences following the defeat of Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.
Seeing as the video already says it, and it’s been more than a week since Endgame opened, SPOILER Peter is still dealing with the effects of Tony’s death and how he fits into this world. Many people even say within the trailer that Spiderman is trying to be the new Iron Man. Considering his suit is a last gift from Tony, you can only imagine how triggering it must be for Peter to continually wear it.
This trailer sees Peter go on vacation with his friends and he is clearly keen to enjoy it, having been wiped from existence with the rest of his class for five years. However, Nick Fury soon shows up and enlists Peter’s help to fight threats involving a Multiverse as an unforeseen consequence of Thanos’s snap. Meanwhile, Peter and MJ continue to get closer and she even cheekily hints that she knows he is Spiderman. (Which would be a fun bucking of the traditional “no-idea-that-you’re-a-superhero” trope that seems to get churned out with most films).
Perhaps the most astounding consequence of this trailer is the confirmed existence of a MCU Multiverse, possibly allowing fun standalone films in “What-If” dimensions, without it having to link to the current MCU, as well as providing a valuable tie-in for such movie franchises as Fantastic Four and X-Men that Disney have recently acquired.
Spider-Man: Far From Home is due to be released July 5th, 2019.
